What is academic advising?
Academic advising at Texas State University is a student-centered, collaborative process which promotes the academic success and growth of undergraduate students while respecting individuals’ diverse interests, abilities, and goals. What is the University Advising Center?
The University Advising Center provides academic advising to Texas State University students who are in the process of exploring and selecting a major. In addition, we assist students in the process of meeting admission requirements for the McCoy College of Business.

Who is my academic advisor?
If your major is Exploratory or Pre-business, you are advised in the University Advising Center. To schedule a meeting, click here.
If you want to declare or have declared your major, you have an academic advisor that can assist you. For a list of the Academic Advising Centers, click here.If you are a first-time college student, you'll be advised in the First-Year Advising Center.

How do I schedule a meeting with an academic advisor?

When can I register for courses?
Your time ticket shows you when you can register. To view your time ticket, you need to access your Registration Status page located in Self-Service Login.

How many credit hours can I take during a semester?

How do I know if I have a hold blocking my registration?
To find out if you have any holds blocking your registration, you need to access your View Holds page located in Self-Service Login.

What is a departmental advising hold? How do I get it removed?
Texas State University officials place departmental advising holds to assure students receive appropriate academic advising assistance before they register for courses.
The University Advising Center places departmental advising holds on students with the following majors who meet the listed criteria:
- Exploratory - because they have accumulated 30 semester credit hours or more and need to discuss their major options.
- Pre-business (Exploratory Professional) - because they have accumulated 45 semester credit hours or more, have less than a 2.50 overall GPA, and need to discuss the admission criteria for the McCoy College of Business.

What is a probation hold? How do I get it removed?
Probation holds are placed on the registration of students who are on academic probation. For more information about academic probation, review this section of the Undergraduate Catalog.

How do I get into a closed class?
You must contact the department offering the course. Click here for instructions on how to request an override for any department at Texas State University.

When is the last day to drop a course?
We strongly recommended that you contact your academic advisor before you drop a course so they can inform you of any possible consequences.
